Overview
The extended major of Chemistry for Sustainability looks at the science of designing chemical products, processes and systems that reduce environmental harm, conserve resources, and support a sustainable future. It integrates your understanding of chemical reactivity with the broader environmental, social and economic contexts in which chemistry operates.
Units involve combinations of workshops, tutorials and/or laboratory work. Monash's School of Chemistry is amongst the top chemistry departments in the world. We place a strong emphasis on research, innovative teaching and science education, developing you in modern chemical practice, problem solving, as well as oral and written communication skills.
As a graduate, you will have knowledge of and literacy in sustainability, green chemistry, and chemical safety. You will have a wide range of career opportunities including in industry, regulatory bodies, and research organisations.
Availability
This extended major can be done as part of S2000 Bachelor of Science, S3001 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global ChallengesĀ (Honours) and S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours) at Clayton.

Learning outcomes
- 1
demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the major area of chemistry for sustainability, as well as the broader areas of synthetic chemistry, medicinal and biological chemistry analytical chemistry, and environmental chemistry
- 2
apply the scientific method to generate new knowledge in the chemical sciences, and integrate chemistry with other science disciplines to recognise and solve scientific and technical problems
- 3
communicate effectively the importance of chemistry for sustainability and its application in everyday life; including designing chemical products, processes and systems that reduce environmental harm, conserve resources, and support a sustainable future
