Overview
The extended major of Chemistry for Health explores how molecular processes underpin biological function, disease mechanisms, therapeutic development and diagnostic innovation. It examines how atoms and molecules interact in living systems and how these interactions can be harnessed to develop medicines, biomedical technologies and chemical tools that improve human health.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of workshops, tutorials and/or laboratory work. Monash's School of Chemistry is amongst the top chemistry departments in the world. We place a strong emphasis on research, innovative teaching and science education, developing students in modern chemical practice, problem solving, as well as oral and written communication skills.
As a graduate, you will have a knowledge of how chemical principles inform therapeutic design, diagnostics, and biomolecular interactions. You will have a wide range of career opportunities including in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, research institutes and medical technology companies.
Availability
This extended major can be done as part of S2000 Bachelor of Science, S3001 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) and S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours) at Clayton.

Learning outcomes
- 1
demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the extended major area of chemistry for health as well as the broader areas that include: synthetic chemistry, medicinal and biological chemistry, analytical chemistry, and AI and machine learning in the chemical sciences.
- 2
apply the scientific method to generate new knowledge in the chemical sciences, and integrate chemistry with other science disciplines to recognise and solve scientific and technical problems.
- 3
communicate effectively the importance of chemistry and its application in everyday life; including applying advanced chemical principles to understand molecular mechanisms underlying human health, disease and therapeutic intervention and critically evaluating contemporary research and industry practices in chemical biology and toxicology.
