Overview
Environmental Earth science is a broad discipline that covers all aspects of the study of the Earth's physical environment and the interaction of that environment with the biosphere.
This area of study provides you with an integrated, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary perspective that will allow you to understand how the Earth's physical systems operate as well as equipping you to face some of the major global challenges such as climate change, land and water degradation, and resource exploration.
First year studies provide a strong background in geology, physical geography, and climate science, and higher year studies then build upon these foundations to explore processes and principles in more detail.
Later, you will gain deeper insights into the systems and processes that form and change our physical environment, such as rivers, soils, oceans, and the atmosphere and how humans impact these systems. You will understand how these processes impact Earth's climate and how we understand and predict natural and anthropogenic climate change. Throughout the area of study there is an emphasis on integration of fundamental scientific principles, learning through enquiry and observation, and applications to real-world problems.
There are many career options available for Earth science graduates. They work as scientists in companies that focus on environmental assessment, contaminant remediation, and water and land resources or in federal and state government agencies such as CSIRO, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Meteorology. Graduates are also able to apply their Environmental Earth Science knowledge to environmental legislation, policy, and management, and may work in management roles for non-government or government organisations, including government departments. There is also a role as educators in schools and tertiary education systems.
Availability
Environmental Earth science is listed in S2000 Bachelor of Science, S3001 Bachelor of Science Advanced – Global Challenges (Honours) and S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours) at Clayton as a major, minor and extended major.

Notes
REQUIREMENTS FOR PROGRESSING TO HONOURS AND OTHER FURTHER STUDIES
You must complete 24 credit points of relevant Level 3 environmental earth science units. With the approval of the honours coordinator, students may also include 6 credit points of relevant Level 3 unit from another discipline as part of this requirement. Please refer to the honours prerequisites table
.
You must meet the entry requirements for S3701 Bachelor of Science (Honours) or meet the progression requirements to the fourth year of S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours).
Learning outcomes
- 1
Demonstrate an understanding of environmental earth science and explain how scientific knowledge is developed by enquiry and observation
- 2
Apply an understanding of interactions within the Earth's physical systems and their interaction of these systems with the biosphere to explain processes at the Earth’s surface
- 3
Apply scientific techniques to explain and investigate the origins of Earth and the formation of landscapes
- 4
Demonstrate the experimental, analytical and problem-solving skills required to gain employment in a variety of earth science careers or to pursue further research
