Overview

Geoscience is the study of the planets – from our own planet Earth to others across our Solar System and beyond. It is a broad science, drawing on chemistry, physics and biology, to understand the processes that create and shape planets.

This area of study covers the formation and evolution of planets, from their deep interior to their surface, and the continuing evolution of our planet through dynamic processes such as plate tectonics, volcanism, and the formation and destruction of mountains. In this area of study, you will learn to read rocks and landscapes to discover how our planet has evolved over time, from our beginning as a hot, molten and inhospitable world, to the formation of the oceans and atmosphere which facilitated life on Earth. You will have further options to specialise in planetary science, geochemistry, geophysics, geo-computation, remote sensing, critical minerals, reading landscapes’ histories and more.

Geosciences sets you up for a variety of post-graduation opportunities. You can find geoscientists in a full range of professional settings from industry and non-profit settings to government and education. Some example topics you might encounter in your career include preparing communities for geohazards, understanding the quality of our groundwater, exploring for critical minerals, understanding past and present climate systems, and supporting geotechnical surveys. Furthermore, all of our units develop transferable skills such as logical thinking, data manipulation, problem solving, team building, research, and communication. The breadth of this area of study is hard to overstate as the study of geosciences underlies and influences everything we do.

Availability

Geoscience is listed in S2000 Bachelor of Science, S3001 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) and S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours) at Clayton as a major, minor and extended major.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PROGRESSING TO HONOURS AND OTHER FURTHER STUDIES

You must complete 24 credit points of relevant Level 3 geoscience units. With the approval of the honours coordinator, students may also include 6 credit points of relevant Level 3 unit from another discipline as part of this requirement. Please refer to the honours prerequisites table

You must meet the entry requirements for S3701 Bachelor of Science (Honours) or meet the progression requirements to the fourth year of S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours).

Learning outcomes

In addition to achieving the broad outcomes of your course, and successfully completing this area of study, you will be able to:
  1. 1

Demonstrate an understanding of geoscience and explain how scientific knowledge is developed by enquiry and observation

  2. 2

Apply scientific techniques to explain and investigate the origins of Earth and the formation of landforms

  3. 3

Explain the interactions between different geological processes and how these processes influence Earth’s climate, landscapes and environments

  4. 4

Demonstrate the experimental, analytical and problem solving skills required to gain employment in geosciences or to pursue further research
