Overview

Immunology is the study of the immune system which protects us from harmful pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses. It also protects us from cancer, causes allergies and autoimmunity, and is linked to other diseases such as cardiovascular disease. Understanding of the immune system allows us to manipulate it to improve human health, including through vaccination or personalised cancer treatments.

Immunology at Monash University provides a comprehensive understanding of the immune system. Your studies will include both theory and laboratory class experiences, and is delivered by active researchers and academics with a deep understanding of the immune system.

The immune system interacts with all other body systems, as such studying immunology complements the study of other areas of the biomedical sciences. The knowledge or application of immunology is useful across many areas of academic research, medicine, public health, in the biotechnology field. Graduates will gain the knowledge to contribute to conversations around global challenges of the 21st
century.

Availability
Immunology is listed in S2000 Bachelor of Science, S3001 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) and S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours) at Clayton as a major, extended major and minor.

The immunology major and extended major are not available in the double degree course S2007 Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Biomedical Science.

Notes

Requirements for progressing to honours and other further studies
You must meet the entry requirements for S3701 Bachelor of Science (Honours) or meet the progression requirements to the fourth year of S3002 Bachelor of Science Advanced - Research (Honours).

You must also complete prerequisite study as per the intended discipline. Refer to the honours prerequisites table.

Learning outcomes

In addition to achieving the broad outcomes of your course, and successfully completing this area of study, you will be able to:
  1. 1

Define and describe the principal features of the immune system, including its structure, development, and functions through theoretical and practical-based knowledge

  2. 2

Define the physical, cellular and molecular processes associated with the development of pathologies exemplified by processes of inflammatory, immunological, haematological and neoplastic disorders through theoretical and practical based knowledge

  3. 3

Articulate the key questions, issues and challenges in the field of immunology, and evaluate how these can be addressed to develop effective solutions through written-and oral-tasks.
