Overview

The Popular music specialisation in the Bachelor of Music develops musicians, performers and creators of the future. In addition to developing practical performance skills and stagecraft, you will acquire a broad range of creative skills, including songwriting and music production, to support the creation of contemporary music that is informed by any combination of popular music styles. In your first year, you will focus on developing techniques and self-directed practice strategies on your principal instrument or voice across a range of musical styles and repertoires. In your second year, you will apply these skills in both solo and ensemble performance contexts through songwriting, live performance and recording environments. In third year, you will have the opportunity to conceptualise and create a live performance and recording project under the guidance of expert teachers within your chosen musical style and/or context. This specialisation not only connects you with current industry practices and practitioners, but also encourages the creation of new music, aligning with the school’s focus on developing the future of Australian contemporary popular music.
