Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Neuropsychology) is a graduate research degree offered by the School of Psychological Sciences. Enrolment involves the independent investigation of a research problem relevant to clinical neuropsychology as well as coursework and clinical placements. It is expected that the research undertaken will make a significant contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the field of clinical neuropsychology. Doctoral students are supported by a minimum of two supervisors throughout their enrolment.
Clinical neuropsychology is a field which applies an understanding of the neural basis of cognition, emotion and behaviour to the assessment and treatment of adults and children with conditions affecting the brain. Clinical neuropsychologists are employed in acute hospitals, rehabilitation centres, aged care programs, forensic settings, psychiatric settings, and paediatric facilities. Private practitioners undertake a range of work including medico-legal assessments.
The degree prepares graduates, using the scientist-practitioner model, to conduct research in neuropsychology and to work as clinical neuropsychologists in a broad range of settings.
Course structure
As the PhD (Clinical Neuropsychology) includes a component of direct client activities, all students are required to be provisionally or generally registered as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) for the duration of the course. You need to apply for provisional registration after you have enrolled in your degree and before you start your coursework.

Successful completion of the program will signify that the student has successfully completed a course of postgraduate training in clinical neuropsychology practice and research under academic supervision, and has submitted a thesis that the examiners have declared to be a significant contribution to knowledge and which demonstrates the student's capacity to carry out independent, original research.

Psychological knowledge and evidence-based practice: apply evidence-based practice principles and advanced knowledge of functional neuroanatomy, cognitive neuroscience, psychological theories, and psychopathology/neuropsychological disorders to inform effective assessment and interventions for clients with known or suspected brain impairment.

Ethics and Professional Practice: apply knowledge of relevant legal/ethical policies, healthcare frameworks and clinical decision-making techniques to facilitate effective and ethical clinical practice

Neuropsychological Assessment: select information across sources (i.e. health records, client, family) and appropriately administer multimodal neuropsychological assessment techniques (i.e. interview, psychometric assessment) to assess cognitive, behavioural and emotional functions in a reliable and valid manner

Neuropsychological Assessment: integrate assessment information and utilise developmental and biopsychosocial frameworks to inform comprehensive case formulations and/or diagnosis, which effectively explains a client's neuropsychological difficulties and informs appropriate management

Neuropsychological Intervention: plan, deliver, and evaluate a range of interventions to improve a client's cognitive, behavioural and/or emotional functioning; tailored to individual goals, neuropsychological status and their socio-cultural environment

Advocacy and Consultation: effectively communicate neuropsychological assessment findings and recommendations to clients and other relevant stakeholders to optimise understanding and management of their neuropsychological difficulties

Advocacy and Consultation: collaborate with interprofessional colleagues, providing consultation and advocacy for the role of clinical neuropsychology in the management of individuals with known or suspected brain impairment, whilst also fostering respectful professional boundaries

Professional accreditation
The program has been accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and on completion students qualify for general registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australian as well as membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS).
In order to gain endorsement as a clinical neuropsychologist, an additional minimum 18 months of approved, supervised, full-time equivalent practice with a board-approved supervisor is required. Further information is available on the Psychology Board of Australia website.

The course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a fifth and sixth year of study in Psychology. Graduates of the program are eligible for general registration as a Psychologist and entry to a registrar program toward Area of Practice Endorsement as a Clinical Neuropsychologist.
