Bachelor of Criminology and Policing
A2014
Overview
Crime is a complex phenomena, which requires it to be viewed from various perspectives. In a joint-venture with Victoria Police, the Bachelor of Criminology and Policing is the only course of its kind in Victoria.
Providing you with an opportunity to achieve a university degree while facilitating a pathway to employment with Victoria Police, the Bachelor of Criminology and Policing is a three-year course which provides you with core studies in criminology and policing. Through core units you will develop a critical understanding of crime, the broader context in which crime occurs, the drivers of criminal behaviour, and the limits of formal and informal responses to crime.
Designed as a pathway to employment with Victoria Police, during the course you will be provided with information which outlines the Victoria Police application process. If you want to pursue a career in Policing you will be required to apply to Victoria Police during your second year of the course (NB: as part of the application process, you will be exempt from the Victoria Police Entrance Examination). If accepted, during the third year of your course, you will undertake studies which will allow you to complete your bachelor degree and concurrently commence a Diploma of Policing with Victoria Police. You will also be allocated a Victoria Police mentor who will support and guide you during your Diploma studies and your journey into the police force .
If you decide not to pursue a career in policing, or if you are unsuccessful in your attempts to enter the police force, you will be transferred into the Bachelor of Criminology where you will extend your knowledge of criminology and where you will further develop skills and expertise which will allow you to engage necessary stakeholders to effectively formulate, influence and evaluate crime and justice policies and practices in a variety of professional contexts.
You will also have the opportunity to enrich your degree by honing your academic and professional skills through a range of flagship rich educational experiences (FREE). For more information on eligibility please see FREE.
