This is a prestigious program of coursework and research in music for high achieving students who have completed a relevant undergraduate degree. You will undertake research methodology training and carry out an independent research or studio project on your selected topic, working closely with a supervisor who will provide you with individual guidance and academic counselling. The handbook's description of this structure
This course consists of a combination of coursework and research.
In the coursework component, you will develop advanced theoretical and/or technical knowledge of your area of music and appropriate research methodologies that you will then apply to a music project. In the research component, you will plan and execute a thesis or creative object in your area of music under the individual guidance of an academic supervisor.
- Composition and music technology students produce a portfolio of original works and critical explanation of/introduction to the portfolio.
- Ethnomusicology and musicology students produce a thesis.
- Music performance students produce a recital and programme notes.
- Popular music students produce a recital and programme notes.
This course comprises 48 points: Part A: Research (24 points) and Part B: Coursework (24 points)
All units are 12 points unless otherwise indicated.
Part A. Research (24 points)
You must undertake independent research in the following units:
- ATS4451 Music and performance honours research A
- ATS4452 Music and performance honours research B
Part B. Coursework (24 points)
You must complete the following units:
- APG4789 Research methods in music and performance
- ATS4834 Music and performance honours project
Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

apply music research methodologies in a chosen area of music;

contextualise original music research and/or project work with reference to existing relevant music scholarship.
Entry requirements
English language
Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a Monash master's by coursework degree, and if admitted you may be eligible for credit.
Successful completion of this course may also provide a pathway to a graduate research degree.

For units ATS4451 and ATS4452, regarding your honours course grade calculation the units are weighted 1.0 each.
