Overview

In a global landscape with competing voices, misinformation and reactive news cycles, only experts and innovators can cut through and make media that matters. A Master of Journalism at Monash University is more than a postgraduate career qualification. We are creating the leaders of journalism for the new wave of media, as well as developing critical communication skills for other careers.

Journalism teaches you to think critically, scrutinise evidence and investigate the structural problems that permeate society – as well as the solutions. You will be exposed to journalism at the cutting edge of digital technologies. State-of-the-art facilities, including television and radio studios and editing suites, ensure our graduates are practice and academically ready for the industry. In-depth knowledge of current and emerging media practice, from investigative journalism and photography to digital and audio-visual production, equips Monash graduates with the skills to create stories that reach everywhere, inspire action and push limits.

Monash graduates are trailblazers in Australian media and beyond: our global approach, including a field trip abroad, gives you the edge in a competitive international market. You will join a community of award-winning academics and peers from all areas of the industry. We will empower you to build on prior study, go deeper and open up vast potential careers in media and research, including PhD study. Our graduates learn how to conduct research, read the media critically, write clearly, and make compelling evidence-based arguments.

Media leads the charge in a rapidly changing world, and Monash graduates are poised to be the innovators who shape what journalism will become. As leaders, graduates of the program make a difference to the world by telling the stories the public need to know.
