Overview

This international double master's program enables you to complete the requirements of the Monash Master of International Relations as well as a second degree with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU).

You will study one year at Monash University in Australia and one year at the partner university. On successful completion of the academic program at Monash and the academic program at the partner university, you will be eligible to graduate with the degrees from both institutions, awarded separately.

This double degree course is subject to maximum quotas for each partner university. If you are interested you must inquire directly to the course coordinator for Master of International Relations in the Faculty of Arts at Monash, and if eligible, will be invited to apply.

Our world is being shaped by big questions about global justice, war, peace, social movements, and inter-state relations. These questions help define what this Master of International Relations is all about. In short, this course offers you a window into the diverse and dynamic world of politics in the 21st century.

Alongside a suite of core units covering key issues in International Relations, you will have the opportunity to curate your learning towards your own interests and career pathway by selecting units from key international relations specialist knowledge areas including:  Global business and management, Global justice and development, and Global security. 

This course provides you with a comprehensive knowledge of international affairs, grounded in the fundamental debates framing global politics and driven by in-depth empirical analysis. Through this, you will be able to make sense of the complexity of global politics by providing the analytical perspectives and skills needed to see both the 'bigger picture' and comprehend detailed aspects of specific issues.

Subject to conditions, you will have the opportunity to pursue research interests in a number of areas, providing you with a potential pathway into a Higher Degree by Research. Our graduates have gone on to a broad range of occupations and have been employed by the likes of the United Nations, the Australian Government, and non-governmental organisations such as the International Red Cross.

Course structure

Monash and SJTU students
Monash students usually commence the first year at Monash and the second year at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Following the completion of the Master of International Relations studies (Part A and B totalling 48 credit points), you will travel to SJTU, to complete broadening Master of Arts in Chinese politics and economy course studies (48 credit points); the thesis will take place at the end of the second year at SJTU.

SJTU students usually commence the first year at SJTU. On the completion of Master of Arts in Chinese politics and economy coursework units, you will travel to Monash to complete Master of International Relations studies (Part A and B totalling 48 credit points). Having completed the Master of International Relations requirements, you will return to SJTU to complete thesis requirements.

SJTU students - to facilitate Monash enrolment requirements, on returning to SJTU you will be enrolled in the following units at Monash. These studies will be equivalent to 48 credit points of SJTU Master of Arts in Chinese politics and economy studies.

Monash students - on transferring to SJTU, you will complete studies approved by the School of International and Public Affairs, SJTU. These studies will be equivalent to 48 credit points of electives in the Monash Master of International Relations. While at SJTU, Monash students will be enrolled in the following units at Monash (48 credit points).

The course is structured in three parts. Part A. Core studies, Part B. Applied studies and Part C. Partner studies.

Part A. Core studies

These studies draw on best practices within the broad realm of international relations practice and research exploring the theoretical, analytical, economic, and security dimensions of global politics. 

Part B. Applied Studies

These studies cover key issues in diplomacy and global political economy, gender, peace and security, global migration, and political violence and counter-terrorism.

Part C. Partner studies
On transferring to SJTU you will complete studies as approved at SJTU School of International and Public Affairs equivalent to 48 credit points of electives in the Monash Master of International Relations as per the requirements of the SJTU course.

Part B. Applied studies (12 credit points)

You must complete 12 credit points from the following capstone units.

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
