Overview
This international double master's program enables you to complete the requirements of the Monash Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies (MITS), as well as a second degree with one of the following universities:
- Jean Moulin Lyon III (Specialising in business and legal translation, French)
- Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (Specialising in interpreting and translation/Japanese)
- Università di Bologna (Specialising in specialized translation)
In each case, you will study one year at Monash University in Australia and one year at the partner university. On successful completion of the academic program at Monash and the academic program at the partner university, students will be eligible to graduate with the degrees from both institutions, awarded separately.
This double degree course is subject to maximum quotas for each partner university. If you are interested you must inquire directly to the course coordinator for MITS in the Faculty of Arts at Monash, and if eligible, will be invited to apply.
The Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies is aimed at students with advanced bilingual proficiency. It seeks to develop your skills in translation and interpreting from/to English and another language, and your awareness of practical and theoretical approaches to translation/interpreting practice and studies.
You will gain a foundation in theories of translation and interpreting and receive training in research in the field. Upon completion of this course, you will be able to conceptualise translation/interpreting studies as an academic discipline in its historical, cross-disciplinary and intercultural context.
Students who wish to be recommended for National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) accreditation in Australia on completion of the course would need to sit (and achieve the required result in) final exams after completion of the second year of the degree. 48 credit points- 18 credit points that must include APG5611, APG5875 and APG5677;
- 12 credit points that is one of APG5044 or APG5883 as you cannot complete both; and
- 18 credit points chosen from the remaining listed units (APG5601, APG5602, APG5603 and APG5604).
Note: You may choose to replace your 12 credit points selected from APG5044 or APG5883 with other elective options in consultation with the Master of Interpreting and

Partner institution - Jean Moulin Lyon III (JMLIII)
All students commence the program at Monash, Australia and complete the program in Jean Moulin Lyon III, France. Following the completion of the academic program at Monash comprising 48 credit points (one year full-time) of study toward the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies, you will travel to France to complete a further 60 ECTS (one year full-time) of study toward the JMLIII Master of Foreign Languages.
Partner institution - Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (KCUFS)
All students commence the program at Monash, Australia and complete the program at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, Japan. Following the completion of the academic program at Monash comprising 48 credit points (one year full-time) of study toward the Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies, you will complete a further 20 KCUFS points (one year full-time) of study toward the KCUFS Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies.
Partner institution - Università di Bologna (Bologna)
All students commence the program at their home institution and complete the program at the partner institution.
For Monash students, following your first year of study toward the Monash Master of Interpreting and Translation Studies, you will travel to Italy to complete a further 60 ECTS of study toward the Università di Bologna Master of Specialized Translation.
For Università di Bologna students, following your first year of study toward the Master of Specialized Translation, you will travel to Monash to complete a further 48 credit points of study toward the Monash Master of Interpreting and Translation studies.
Students commencing at Monash
Your Monash studies will focus on foundational and core studies that include the theory and practice of translation and interpreting, familiarising you with current research models and methodologies in translation studies.
Your studies will draw on best practices within interpreting and translation fields, providing intensive language-specific practice in written and oral transfer skills at a level required for certification by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). In addition to the relevant theoretical frameworks, the core studies will also provide you with the discourse analysis, ethical and professional frameworks that are essential for professional interpreting and translation practice.
Students commencing at Bologna
Your Monash studies will draw on best practices within interpreting and translation fields, providing intensive language-specific practice in written and oral transfer skills at a level required for certification by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). In addition to the relevant theoretical frameworks, the core studies will also provide you with the discourse analysis, ethical and professional frameworks that are essential for professional interpreting and translation practice.
You will also undertake professional or scholarly work that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development and develop advanced skills in specialised fields of translation.
