Overview

This comprehensive degree builds practical knowledge and essential skills for international careers in policy making and management across the spectrum of public sector activities. The multi-disciplinary program develops understanding of the processes of policy formation, the delivery of policy programs, and the political and structural realities that can impact on decision-making. The course combines a focus on foundation knowledge and understanding of critical issues in public policy, governance, policy analysis and public sector reform.

 You can choose to specialise in global studies which will develop your policymaking skills and knowledge in international contexts, or policy studies from which you can study a choice of streams including: Business Innovation, Public Health, Public Policy and Urban Design.

Participants are equipped for careers in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors and for roles that are engaged in policy development at all levels of government and between governments.

Course structure

Part A. Core studies36 credit points
You must complete the following units.

Note 1. If you are admitted at entry level 2 and have completed the Monash University Graduate Certificate of Public Policy, you must complete 18 credit points in this part comprising of units not completed in your Graduate Certificate.

Note 2. If you are admitted at entry level 2 and have completed an honours degree or a masters degree in a cognate discipline, you must complete 24 credit points
Part B. Applied studies12 credit points
You must complete the following capstone unit.

Note: If you are participating in the Global Intercampus Program, you will replace ATI5236 with APG5236 at the Monash Australia campus
Part C. Specified elective studies24 credit points
You must complete 24 credit points of Public Policy and Management related studies from the following elective units. 

Note 1. If you are admitted at entry level 2, and have completed the Monash University Graduate Certificate of Public Policy, you must complete 18 credit points of electives in this Part comprising of units not completed in your Graduate Certificate.

Note 2. If you are admitted at entry level 2, and have completed a honours degree or a masters degree in a cognate discipline, you must complete 12 credit points of electives in this Part.

Note 3: Units are grouped into areas of interest. You may choose units from one area or across various areas to tailor your degree. The same units appear in multiple areas/parts however each unit can only be credited once towards the degree.

The course comprises 72 credit points structured into three parts: Part A. Core studies, Part B. Applied studies and Part C. Specified elective studies.

Part A. Core studies

These studies will introduce you to public policy theory and practice at an advanced graduate level. Throughout these studies, you will gain practical knowledge and skills that will provide a solid foundation for the specialist studies units undertaken in the program.  

Part B. Applied studies

The focus of these studies is professional and project work, focused locally or globally, that can contribute to a portfolio of professional development.

Part C. Specified elective studies

The focus of these units is to develop your expertise in Public Policy and Management studies and will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed for the capacity to work and communicate across the borders of context or discipline.

Masters entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2, and have completed the Monash University Graduate Certificate of Public Policy, you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part A (18 credit points), Part B and Part C (18 credit points) that have not already been completed in the Graduate Certificate.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2, and have completed a honours degree or a master’s degree in a cognate discipline, you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part A (24 credit points), Part B and Part C (12 credit points).

Note 1: Students eligible for credit for prior studies may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

Note 2: The Global Intercampus Program is only available for entry point 1.
