Overview

In this course, you will specialise in two key areas of interpreting practice: healthcare and legal settings, which include police and court interpreting. You will gain essential knowledge and specialist language specific to these fields.

You will learn about the communication styles and discourse features of the various participants that medical and legal interpreters encounter. In healthcare, this include doctors, nurses, clinicians, mental health specialists, and patients. In legal settings, you will work with police officers, lawyers, judicial officers, prison and parole officers, as well as individuals who may lack specialised knowledge of the legal system.

The course will provide you with the the opportunity to focus on both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, using English and other languages. You will explore interactional approaches to interpreting, along with theoretical concepts related to health and legal interpreting as emerging research fields.

The course consists of 12 credit points of study, where you will be introduced to the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values needed to become a skilled interpreter in specialised health and legal interpreting at a graduate level.

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

You must complete (12 credit points):

  • APG5605 Specialised health interpreting
  • APG5606 Specialised legal interpreting

Learning outcomes

  1. 1

    Identify and describe the discourse and communication features of the interlocutors that medical and legal interpreters work with;

  2. 2

    apply interpreting skills in the fields of specialised health and legal interpreting;

  3. 3

    bi-directionally interpret dialogues and passages that are delivered in professional settings, and that are of moderate to high levels of difficulty;

  4. 4

    provide LOTE-English / English-LOTE consecutive interpreting in the specialised areas of health and legal interpreting;

  5. 5

    provide LOTE-English / English-LOTE simultaneous interpreting in the specialised area of health and legal interpreting, including the use of chuchotage (whispered interpreting);

  6. 6

    identify and discuss key areas of research within the fields of health and legal interpreting.

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
