Overview

This specialised program in Banking and Finance will equip you with knowledge and applied skills to manage money and investments in the dynamic landscape of the banking and finance industries. You will learn about key banking and finance concepts, including financial management, investments, risk management, international finance, and commercial and investment banking. This program will equip you with the skills to pursue diverse banking and finance career opportunities, such as corporate treasurer, securities dealer, commercial and investment banker, financial analyst, merger and acquisitions specialist, risk consultant, fund manager and portfolio manager.

In choosing your units, you must ensure that you complete no more than 10 units (60 credit points) at Level 1 and at least six units (36 credit points) at Level 3, including four units (24 credit points) at Level 3 offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Electives can be chosen from across the University, including to complete a major or minor from another course if you have met the required prerequisites and there are no restrictions on enrolling in the units. Enrolment in Faculty of Business and Economics units at campuses other than your campus of enrolment is subject to there being capacity after students from that campus have enrolled. You should also be aware of travel and timetabling limitations.

No more than two units can contribute towards two majors, or a major and a minor, in the same course (including a double degree course). The same unit is not credited towards two minors.

If you are in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree are credited as electives towards this Banking and Finance degree.

The course is structured in four parts: Part A. Foundation business knowledge, Part B. Specialist discipline knowledge, Part C. Capstone unit, and Part D Free elective study.

Part A. Foundation business knowledge

This will provide you with a study of banking and finance disciplines and the impact they have on decision making in organisations.

Part B. Specialist discipline knowledge

These studies will develop your capacity as a critical and creative professional who is able to apply knowledge of banking and finance to provide discipline-based solutions for business. Units contained within the discipline may meet the requirements for professional accreditation bodies.

Part C. Capstone unit

The capstone unit will consolidate your knowledge and skills acquired through the study of your course and provide experience in multi-disciplinary processes and decision making.

Part D. Free elective study

These are free electives which will enable you to further your knowledge of banking and finance, or business more broadly, or to select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol.

You must complete units as specified in Parts A, B, C and D (144 credit points): including 96 credit points of study in Parts A, B and C, and 48 credit points of free electives in Part D.

Part B. Specialist discipline knowledge and Part C. Capstone unit (78 credit points)

You must complete the following nine units (54 credit points):

  • BFF1001 Foundations of finance
  • BFF2140 Business finance 
  • BFF2401 Commercial banking and finance
  • BFF3121 Investments and portfolio management
  • BFF3231 International finance
  • BFF3999 Finance and society*
  • BTF3601 Banking law 
  • ECF1200 Macroeconomics 
  • ETF2100 Introductory econometrics 

You must also complete two sets of paired units from the following options. When you select the two sets, you must complete both units in that set (24 credit points):

i) Banking (12 credit points):

  • BFF3351 Investment banking
  • BFF3841 Credit analysis and lending management

ii) Financial management (12 credit points):

  • BFF3140 Advanced business finance
  • BFF3651 Treasury management

iii) Investment and security analysis (12 credit points)

  • BFF2701 Equity markets
  • BFF3751 Derivatives

Part D. Free elective study (48 credit points)

All applicants must satisfy the equivalence of the VCE subject pre-requisites.

VET Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma graduates:
Applicants will require a minimum of 60% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements.

Diploma of Business Part 2 average: 60%
Monash University Foundation Year average: 70%

Higher education studies:
Applicants will require a minimum 60% average to be considered for selection. Preference will be given to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course. A minimum of two single units must be completed in order to meet minimum admission requirements.

To be eligible to apply for entry into Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) (B3701), you must have achieved a distinction grade average (70%) or above in 24 credit points of studies at Level 3. In addition, some particular Level 3 units may need to be completed for admission to honours.
