The Graduate Diploma of Project Management can be completed in just over one year and provides advanced knowledge of project management best practice. It will enable you to upskill and deepen your understanding of project management to launch or advance your career in this dynamic area. Stay ahead of the latest developments in the field and keep your skills, knowledge and insights sharp.

You’ll complete eight units, with the course structured in two parts – Project management essentials knowledge; and Project management advanced theory and practice. You will develop specialist expertise in managing and delivering complex projects, and gain skills to critically analyse multifaceted problems and identify adaptive, innovative approaches for projects across multiple industries.

This course will introduce you to project management studies at an advanced graduate level, and is perfect if your previous qualification is not in a related field you want to consolidate your practical experience into a formal qualification. In addition, you’ll be studying master’s level units, which will count towards a Master’s level qualification should you want to expand your knowledge further in the future. The online delivery of the program means you can also fit study around your busy work and family commitments.

This course is structured in two parts  Part A. Project Management essentials knowledge and Part B. Project Management advanced theory and practice.

Part A. Project Management essentials knowledge

In these studies, you will develop an understanding of the principles and techniques of delivering projects using different methods, processes and knowledge frameworks. You will explore the techniques to manage the project context, including people, stakeholders, communications, culture, and politics.

These studies will also introduce you to project management studies at advanced graduate level. They are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field, and build on existing professional work experience.

Part B. Project Management advanced theory and practice

In these studies you will develop specialist expertise in organising the project function to deliver value through your ability to manage complex projects and knowledge. These studies will introduce you to advanced graduate level concepts in project management within allied disciplines. In this part you will also develop specialist expertise to critically analyse complex problems and to identify adaptive approaches so agreed project outcomes are delivered across multiple boundaries, utilising innovative project practices.

Graduate Diploma entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 48 points, comprising Part A and Part B.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 24 points, comprising Part B.

Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

The course comprises 48 points structured into two parts: Part A. Project Management essentials knowledge (24 points) and Part B Project Management advanced theory and practice (24 points).

Part A. Project Management essentials knowledge (24 points)

You must complete:

  • OPO4001 The dynamic context of project delivery / OPO5901 The dynamic context of project delivery
  • OPO4002 The planning approach to project management / OPO5902 The planning approach to project management
  • OPO4003 The learning approach to project management / OPO5903 The learning approach to project management

Part B. Project Management advanced theory and practice (24 points)

You must complete:

  • OPO5000 The rise of project-based organisations
  • OPO5001 The project as a social system
  • OPO5002 Project management for organisational innovation
  • OPO5003 Managing project knowledge

Entry requirements

English language

Monash minimum: Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Progression to further studies

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma of of Project Management may be eligible for admission at entry point 3 into the Master of Project Management, provided you have satisfied the appropriate entry requirements.

Professional accreditation

The faculty has commenced the accreditation process for full recognition by the Australian Institute of Project Management and the Project Management Institute. Graduates will be eligible to apply for professional membership of the Project Management Institute (PMI).
