Artificial intelligence

C2005 Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence is a specialist course, structured in four parts. In this double degree you complete:

Part A. Foundation studies 

AI foundation studies introduce programming, data and evaluation, technology impacts, and AI systems and tools, including secure and responsible use of AI-enabled systems.

Part B. Specialist studies 

AI specialist studies deepen capabilities in major areas of contemporary AI practice and advanced topics.

Part C. Practice studies 

Practice studies provide a structured, industry-embedded project spine through which you apply your knowledge in progressively more complex contexts, including project scoping, design, implementation, evaluation, governance, and capstone delivery.

Media Communication

A2002 Bachelor of Media Communication is a specialist course, structured in four parts. In this double degree you complete:

Part A. Core studies

These units build your competence in: 

  • analysing and understanding the current state and past developments in media communication locally and globally;
  • understanding impacts of media and communication transformation, and media power; and
  • creating future scenarios and media communication visions by developing your preparedness and adaptability for future media communication change and creativity.

Part B. Foundation studies

These units involve developing your competencies across a range of specified media areas and linking knowledge and media practice in professional contexts, such as conceptual and implementation skills, project and content management skills, hands-on experience in putting knowledge into practice, and thereby testing and creatively experimenting with (strategic) knowledge about media transitions and transformations. It also involves developing your competency in ethical and legal aspects of media communication.

Part C. Specialist studies

These units involve further developing specialised competencies necessary for you to work in different knowledge communities and media communication professional settings. It includes competence in engaging with stakeholders, working in teams, media literacy, and participatory research and media making in collaboration with experts from academia, industry, government, and the community. It also includes competency in social and cross-cultural awareness.

The Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence is a practice-centred, industry-embedded undergraduate degree designed to prepare industry-ready AI practitioners. You will develop technical proficiency in AI foundations and applications so that you can plan, develop, deploy, and manage AI-enabled solutions responsibly in real-world contexts across sectors such as business, healthcare, finance, logistics, the public sector, creative industries, science, and the environment. The course is designed with emphasis on real-world application, responsible delivery, and production deployment of AI-enabled systems.

As the course is intended for students who want to apply AI safely and effectively within organisational workflows, data environments, and professional settings, you will learn how to translate complex real world problems into AI related tasks, evaluate whether AI is appropriate for a given use case, and design solutions that align with stakeholder needs, operational constraints, and governance obligations. The course places strong emphasis on responsible AI practice, including ethics, privacy, security, safety, and risk management, together with production deployment and lifecycle management.

If you are an eligible student you may apply for the industry-based learning (IBL) placement program as part of the curriculum. Through the IBL placement program you will apply the skills and knowledge you have gained directly in a professional organisation.

The Bachelor of Media Communication responds to the increasing global demand for graduates with a deep understanding of the role of media in contemporary social, cultural and economic life and well-developed professional skills in communication. The course will provide you with analytical and critical thinking skills through a core program of professional communication practice alongside specialist study in a related field such as journalism, media, screen and public relations. The core units will offer a range of practical experiences utilising the Monash Media Lab.

You will develop cross-cultural competency, social awareness and a global outlook. This course is suitable if you wish to pursue a career in media communication occupations across a broad range of media industry sectors and other professional domains, including government, corporate and NGO. Relevant occupations include journalist, video producer, media content coordinator, public relations professional, digital communications coordinator, director of social media, researcher, media educator.

The Bachelor of Media Communication offers four specialisations: Journalism, Media, Public relations, and Screen.
