Overview

Designed with the experienced early childhood educator in mind, the Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education has been specifically developed for early childhood professionals who want to upgrade their qualification to an industry recognised “fourth year” to enable advancement into leadership roles within early childhood settings.  The course aims to provide you with a strong foundation for transformative leadership, with the capacity to build sustainable communities, and to educate young children to become engaged 21st century citizens.

The course builds on your strength as an early childhood educator and challenges you to extend and reconfigure your practitioner knowledge and practice. This course will prepare you for a career as a skilled, critical and effective educator teaching infants and children from birth to five years of age in childcare, kindergartens and preschools. Intimately connected with the prestigious Fleer’s Conceptual PlayLab, the course is built around themes that encompass the holistic and integrated nature of early childhood education with specific foci on: play, science, and sustainability.

During the course you will undertake professional experience which will allow you to extend the specific professional knowledge and teaching skills needed to engage young children in inspiring, exciting and challenging learning experiences.

The course comprises 48 credit points structured into two parts: Part A. Early childhood education studies and Part B. Applied professional experience.

Part A. Early childhood education studies

These studies will provide you with core and advanced knowledge and skills relevant to thoughtful, innovative and evidence-based practice within early childhood education. You will acquire an understanding of the broad principles of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment that underpin the teaching and learning of infants and children from birth to five years of age in childcare, kindergartens and preschools.

Part B. Applied professional experience

Through the completion of supervised placement in early childhood settings, these studies will allow you to extend the specific professional knowledge and teaching skills needed to engage young children in inspiring, exciting and challenging learning experiences.

Part A. Early childhood education studies (48 points)

You must complete the following units.  

  • EDF5042 Leadership for children, families and community partnerships
  • EDF5043 Environmental and sustainability education in early childhood communities
  • EDF5044 Play and pedagogy
  • EDF5045 Science, technology, engineering and mathematics in early childhood educational contexts
  • EDF5046 Holistic child development, health and wellbeing
  • EDF5047 Early childhood leadership and professional identity
  • EDF5048 Creative encounters with the arts and languages
  • EDF5049 Professional practice in early childhood

Part B. Applied professional experience (0 points)

You must complete 60 days of supervised professional experience in early childhood settings.

You must complete the following units.  

  • EDF5050 Early childhood professional experience 1A (0 points) OR EDF5051 Early childhood professional experience 1B (0 points)^
  • EDF5052 Early childhood professional experience 2A (0 points)
  • EDF5053 Early childhood professional experience 3A (0 points)
  • EDF5055 Early childhood professional experience 4A(0 points)
  • EDF5059 Early childhood professional experience 5B (0 points)

^ You will be awarded credit for EDF5050 or EDF5051 as recognition of prior learning

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

Entry requirements

English language

Above Monash Minimum: Level D, that is: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 7.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 65; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score 98 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 27, Listening: 24, Reading: 24 and Speaking: 23; or Equivalent approved English test
