Overview

Designed to advance your educational knowledge and expertise to enable local and global educational change, the Master of Education provides you with the opportunity to engage with critical disciplinary issues and contemporary debates to develop the capacity to have impact. Selecting from a choice of specialisations and unique pathways that will suit educators from a range of sectors including early childhood, schools, higher education, workplaces and the community, you will have the opportunity to tailor your learning experience to best facilitate your learning objectives and needs.  

Intended to cultivate critical thinking, analytical and creative problem-solving capabilities, you will learn in a supportive environment where you will work with your peers and leading experts in Education. In this context, you will be challenged to apply your new knowledge and skills to real world problems. By selecting a pre-defined specialisation in early childhood education, digital learning, inclusive and special education, STEM education^, Social justice^ or mathematics leadership*, you will focus on the concepts, issues and learnings particular to that specialisation. While the general education specialisation will provide you with an opportunity to engage with a range of contemporary educational areas.

The course is mindful of the busy professional lives and diverse needs and expertise of our learners. Consequently, you will have access to a range of flexibly taught units, while undertaking the course either full-time or part-time.

This course also offers the opportunity to expand your learning into a higher degree by research.

*The mathematics leadership specialisation is offered on a cohort basis only.

Course structure

The course is structured in three parts: Part A. Orientation to education, Part B. Expert studies in education and Part C. Professional inquiry. 

Part A. Orientation to education

These studies will introduce you to contemporary issues in the study of education. They are intended for students who come into the course without previous qualifications in education or work experience in education-related fields. You will engage with academic traditions and scholarly practices in the field of education at the postgraduate level, become acquainted with a broad range of debates across education contexts and develop an understanding of the complexities evident in the field.

Part B. Expert studies in education

These studies will allow you to extend your knowledge, skills and proficiency within your chosen specialisation area.  You will focus on the key theoretical frameworks and concepts particular to your field of interest, as you engage with critical disciplinary issues and contemporary debates.  The expertise which you develop within your specialisation, will equip you to make contextually confident decisions that speak to the needs of a contemporary workplace.

Part C. Professional inquiry

These studies provide you with an opportunity to undertake a program of coursework study which you can tailor to your own interests. This may include selecting a sequence of units in an identified area or selecting units from a broad cross section of educational interests.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you will complete 96 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you will complete 72 credit points, comprising Part B and Part C
  • If you are admitted at entry level 3 you will complete 48 credit points, comprising Part B.

Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies, you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

NB: Students completing the mathematics leadership specialisation or studying in Singapore will be admitted at level 3 and will complete 48 points, comprising of Part B.

A pathway to graduate research (e.g. master by research, PhD) is available if you:

  • achieve a weighted average mark (WAM) of at least 75% in the units of this course.

  • this pathway is not available at the point of entry;
  • if undertaking the graduate research pathway you must enrol in:
    • EDF5613 Research approaches in education (12 credit points); and
    • EDF5614 Research project in education (12 credit points);
  • your eligibility to undertake this pathway will be checked prior to the commencement of EDF5613;
  • if you are commencing at entry level 1 or 2, you must take the required two units in the final semester of your studies; and
  • if you are commencing at entry level 3, you must:
    • transfer into the general education studies specialisation; and
    • take the required two units in the final semester of your studies.

English language

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Pathways

The Monash English Bridging (MEB) program is offered by Monash College and is designed for students who have met the academic requirements for Monash, but who have narrowly missed the English language requirements. Upon successful completion of the Monash English Bridging program, students can gain direct entry into the course providing the following proficiency level requirements are met:

Courses requiring an IELTS of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0) - 10, 15 or 20 week program

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a graduate research degree if you:

  • achieve a weighted average mark of at least 70% and a minimum mark of 70% in EDF5613 Research approaches in education and EDF5614 Research project in education, you may apply for admission to 0079 Doctor of Philosophy.
  • achieve a weighted average mark of at least 65% and a minimum mark of 65% in EDF5613 Research approaches in education and EDF5614 Research project in education, you may apply for admission to D7001 Master of Philosophy.
