Overview
The Master of Professional Counselling is a professional entry course suited to those with an interest in counselling. This course is designed to prepare you to become a registered counsellor in settings such as community mental health, schools, health centres, workplaces and in private practice. The course is also suitable if you are already working in roles such as teaching, social work and human resources, and wish to utilise counselling skills to support and work with others. In this course you will study major approaches to counselling, introductory research methodology, and you will also be introduced to ethical and professional issues that arise when undertaking counselling as a profession. You will complete counselling practice placements thus providing you with an opportunity to consolidate your theoretical understanding with applied learning practices.

The handbook's description of this structure
The course is structured in two parts. Part A. Professional studies in counselling and Part B. Professional practice in counselling.
Part A. Professional studies in counselling
These studies will develop and advance your knowledge of counselling as a profession. With a particular focus on mental health and multicultural contexts, you will examine the major lifespan theories and counselling approaches. Additionally, you will examine and become conversant with the main approaches to counselling in different contexts, and address the ethical and professional issues in undertaking counselling as a profession. Further, you will develop your counselling research design skills.
Part B. Professional practice in counselling
These studies will extend your application of counselling theory to practice as you undertake supervised professional experience as an intern counsellor. As part of these studies, you will complete 768 hours of clinical placements, including a minimum of 300 hours of client contact and 468 hours of non-contact placement activities.

Part B. Professional practice in counselling (18 points)
You must complete:
- EDF5535 Counselling internship (12 points)
- EDF5552 Counselling practicum
In Part B, you will undertake 768 hours of clinical placements, including a minimum of 300 hours of client contact and 468 hours of non-contact placement activities. Through these mandatory placements, you will have an opportunity to apply theory to practice under supervision in clinical settings.

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
