Overview

This double degree course in engineering and biomedical science can lead to a rewarding career designing medical technology to improve human lives. Advances in biological sciences and demand for technological solutions are creating new opportunities for engineers. In the next 25 years, engineering will be transformed as it fuses with developments in biomedical science.

Monash University has pioneered this emerging field. Some examples include the Monash Vision Group's work on the bionic eye and our new 4D lung-imaging method. Join our scientists and engineers in developing the latest biomedical innovations and improving lives.

You can personalise your study by combining one of five engineering disciplines with aspects of anatomy, biochemistry, clinical medicine, epidemiology and preventative medicine, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology and psychology. This will give you the skills you need to help solve challenging medical problems.

You will showcase your biomedical and engineering knowledge in a final project and can then choose from an abundance of rewarding and exciting career options.

ENGINEERING

E3001 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is a specialist course that develops through four themes that combine to underpin engineering practice: fundamentals and breadth study, design, knowledge and applications, and professional practice.

Part A. Engineering fundamentals and breadth study

These units will develop your understanding of natural and physical sciences, mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines.  If you have not completed the Australian VCE (Units 3 & 4) or equivalent Specialist mathematics and/or Physics with the required study score you will need to enrol in the foundation units ENG1090 and/or PHS1001.

Part B. Engineering design

These units will develop the engineering techniques, tools and resources for the conduct, design and management of engineering design processes and projects, both in the industrial setting and in the development of research experiments.

Part C. Engineering knowledge and application

These units will provide in-depth knowledge of the specific engineering methods of a branch of engineering and will integrate the specific engineering methods and discipline knowledge into practice. You will develop skills to identify and apply knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline. Additionally, your studies will focus on your understanding and application of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in your discipline.

Part D. Professional practice

These units will develop your skills in readiness for the engineering workplace. You will develop skills in effective team membership and team leadership, the use and management of commercially relevant data, and the legal responsibilities of engineers. This study will integrate the theme 'Engineering knowledge and application' with your specialist field of engineering.

BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

M2003 Bachelor of Biomedical Science is a specialist course that provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of biomedical science. Through completion of the core biomedical/BMS units you will learn about the foundations of biomedical sciences, the body in health and disease, and the role of biomedical sciences in society. Scientific, academic and professional skill development is integrated across the course to prepare you for the workplace or further study. You will be building a foundation for a career in the biomedical and health sciences, with your training beginning on day one with our exceptional learning opportunities and education delivery from leading experts in their field.

Foundations of Biomedical Sciences

You will gain an understanding of core scientific concepts which underpin biomedical science disciplines; including chemistry, biology and physics.

Biomedicine of health and disease

Understanding the structure and function of cells, tissues, organ systems and the body in health and disease across the lifespan is a cornerstone of biomedical science. Through your degree you will learn about these concepts through the contexts of biomedical disciplines such as anatomy, biochemistry, bioinformatics, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, pharmacology and physiology.

Biomedicine and society

Across your degree you will learn about the impact of biomedical science in society and how it shapes our community. This includes how biomedical research breakthroughs are translated to clinical application and their impact on health policy, the broader societal contexts of health and disease through study of epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, evidenced-based medicine, health care systems and global health challenges.

Research methods and techniques

Interwoven through the core units of this course, you will learn about research methods and participate in highly engaging laboratory practicals in world-class facilities. This includes learning about research design including observational and experimental design, and research and laboratory techniques. Across your degree you will learn how to collect, analyse, interpret and communicate data to targeted audiences. You will also have the opportunity to engage with world-leading researchers and learn about their cutting-edge research.

Personal and professional development

In addition to the scientific knowledge and research skills you will acquire across your degree, you will also have the opportunity to develop employability skills including communication, teamwork and critical thinking; with inclusion and diversity in mind. To further prepare you for the workforce, you will engage in a course-wide professional and personal development program which includes wellbeing, career development, and professionalism.
