Overview

Complex urban challenges require design, development and planning professionals who are skilled, creative and entrepreneurial

The Urban Design and Development course at Monash Indonesia focuses on complex urban challenges involving climate change, environmental sustainability, social equality and technological transformations. It provides students with an opportunity to cultivate informed visions, practical projects, and strategic proposals that address such challenges in Indonesia and other parts of the rapidly urbanising world.

Real world projects

The course is powered by a transdisciplinary ethos and multisectoral outlook that keeps the real world firmly in view.

The curriculum is centred around experimental studio projects integrating environmental sciences, social sciences, data analytics, and humanities areas with design and development practices. The studios address pressing global, regional and national issues, and are coordinated with specialised lecture and seminar-based units on topics such as ecology, urban theory, smart cities, technology, governance, policy and regulation.

This approach is anchored in the everyday life and empirical realities of the city of Jakarta itself, and the towns, and extended settlement systems that surround it. The course works actively with governmental, industry, and civil society stakeholders to generate innovative projects that are tailored to local living environments.

Flexible study options

The Graduate Diploma of Urban Design and Development may be taken flexibly in full-time or part-time durations, with units delivered in hybrid, online and on-campus modes.

On completion of the Graduate Diploma of Urban Design and Development, you may progress to the Master of Urban Design and Development.

As a graduate of the Master of Urban Design and Development, you will be equipped with the conceptual, creative and technical skills to develop integrative solutions to the complex urban challenges resulting from climate change, environmental degradation and development inequalities.

Multidisciplinary participants
