Master of Urban Design
F6006
Overview
Complex urban challenges require design, development and planning professionals who are skilled, creative and entrepreneurial.
The Master of Urban Design at Monash Indonesia equips you with the expertise to shape and contribute to the future of urban life, grounded in an ethos of evidence-informed creativity and augmented through an interwoven curriculum.
Future Urban Life
As urbanisation transforms our world, this degree explores how ‘urban life’ permeates cities and beyond, transforming neighbourhoods, towns and regions. It fosters design that addresses the impacts of - climate change, resource depletion, uneven development - and helps improve the quality of life for diverse human and non-human communities.
You will design across multiple scales and typologies: inclusive neighbourhoods, vertical innovation hubs, 15-minute towns, cyber-physical places, historic quarters, smart mobility networks, amphibious waterfronts, sponge cities, and agropolitan bioregions.
Evidence-Informed Creativity
The degree is grounded in an ethos of evidence-informed creativity, combining rigorous analysis, imagination and real-world engagement.
This ethos prepares you to engage with the pulse of urban life - sensing, documenting, analysing, and interpreting its complexities to drive your creative work. Advanced digital tools - such as data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) - are harnessed to empower your design practice.
Collaborating with city-makers in government, industry, civil society, and local communities, you will create innovative and informed visions for urban life in Jakarta, Indonesia, Asia and beyond.
Interwoven Curriculum
Our curriculum combines three essential approaches to form a cohesive learning experience:
- Theory-practice integration: Connecting ideas and actions through diverse media - writing, drawing, three-dimensional modelling, and cartography - within interactive formats such as seminars, studios, and exhibitions.
- Immersive learning: Combining campus-based education with empirical fieldwork, international studies, and hybrid in-person and virtual collaboration.
- Research-driven inquiry: Developing analytical capacities, critical thinking, and a transdisciplinary outlook as the foundation for leadership and lifelong learning.
Flexible study options
The Master of Urban Design may be taken full time or part time, with units delivered via a combination of face to face and online modes.
You may leave after Part A with a Graduate Certificate in Urban Design or after Parts A and B with a Graduate Diploma in Urban Design. Graduates of the complete Master of Urban Design will be equipped with the conceptual, creative and technical skills to develop integrative solutions to the complex urban challenges resulting from climate change, environmental degradation and development inequalities.
