Overview

This course aims to increase your understanding of theoretical and methodological aspects of research, to develop your analytic, research and communication skills, and to provide you with advanced knowledge in specific areas of the science and practice of psychology. In this course you must complete coursework components designed to expand your knowledge of statistics and the ethics of psychological research and practice, and broaden your understanding of the discipline. You will also undertake a supervised research project which aims to provide training in both discipline-specific and generic research skills.

This course involves a fourth year of study in Psychology. The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a LEVEL 2 APAC accredited degree.

The course is structured in two parts: Part A. Research studies and Part B. Coursework studies.

Part A. Research studies

In these studies you will complete a supervised research project which aims to provide you with training in both discipline-specific and generic research skills. The research project forms the basis of a literature review and research paper presented at the end of the course.

Part B. Coursework studies

In these studies you will expand your knowledge of statistics and the ethics of psychological research and practice, as well as broaden your understanding of the psychological science discipline.

The course comprises 48 credit points, of which 24 credit points are focussed on research and 24 points are focused on coursework focusing on psychological science.

The course is structured in two parts: Part A. Research studies (24 credit points), and Part B. Coursework studies (24 credit points).

Units are 6 points unless otherwise indicated.

PART A. Research studies (24 points)

You must complete the following unit:

  • PSY4100 Psychology honours: Research project (24 points)

PART B. Coursework studies (24 points)

You must complete the following units:

  • PSY4210 Statistics and data science for psychology
  • PSY4220 Ethics, legal and professional issues in psychology
  • PSY4270 Psychological assessment and intervention

You must complete the following unit (Clayton):

  • PSY4215 Data communication: From research problem to storytelling

You must complete the following unit (Malaysia):

  • PSY4110 Psychology in society

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

    Apply coherent theoretical and empirical knowledge that underpins the core areas of psychology to critically evaluate and effectively communicate research using a variety of sources.

    Engage in research inquiry and develop critical and innovative thinking to investigate substantive research problems in the science and practice of psychology.

    Critically analyse psychological contexts including cultural considerations to construct, implement and interpret appropriate psychological and psychometric techniques,assessments and evidence-based intervention strategies.

    Apply advanced knowledge and technical skills including theoretical, qualitative, experimental and computational approaches to design, conduct and evaluate outcomes of research at pre-professional level of independence.

    Recognise the diversity of populations and demonstrate adaptability in interpersonal communication, interview skills, rapport building and empathic responding for cultural responsiveness and reflexivity in psychological practice and research.

    Demonstrate pre-professional capabilities and competencies, including reflective practice, well-developed judgement and effective collaborative, interpersonal and leadership skills, with a commitment to the values, ethical standards and legislative frameworks that govern the integrity of science and practice in psychology.

Monash Level A, that is: IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to a Monash master's by coursework, and if admitted you may be eligible for credit.  

Successful completion of this course may also provide a pathway to a graduate research degree.

Professional accreditation

The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a LEVEL 2 APAC accredited degree.

In order to be eligible for general registration as a psychologist, a further minimum of one or two years of postgraduate approved study must be undertaken at master's or doctoral level and one or two years of supervised practice depending on qualification undertaken.

To be eligible for provisional registration as a psychologist in Australia, you must meet the requirements of the Psychology Board of Australia.

The first step to becoming a psychologist is to complete five years of approved study in psychology. This normally comprises a bachelor degree that includes the three-year Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited sequence of 10 units in psychology, followed by an accredited fourth and fifth year course in psychology. The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) will provide the fourth year of study.
