Overview

The Graduate Certificate of Epidemiology is offered by the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. The course provides epidemiological, analytical and critical appraisal skills used in clinical and applied research and develops an understanding of epidemiological principles including biostatistics, health promotion and disease that will prepare you to work in the broad domain of public health. The epidemiology of both non-communicable and communicable diseases will be covered, as well as skills in the collection and analyses of data.

The course comprises 24 credit points of core epidemiology studies.

Units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

You must complete the following units (12 points):

  • MPH5040 Introductory epidemiology 
  • MPH5041 Introductory biostatistics 

and two of the following units (12 points):

  • MPH5213 Research methods
  • MPH5218 Infectious diseases: epidemiology and prevention
  • MPH5207 Chronic disease: epidemiology and prevention
  • MPH5214 Demographic methods
  • MPH5236 Clinical trials

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

    apply epidemiological and biostatistical knowledge and skills in public health practice

    access and understand the origin, availability and optimal use of major data and information resources to describe and analyse the health of populations

    apply research methods to understand of public health problems

    critically appraise quantitative papers published in the epidemiological and public health literature

    assess the influence and risk of determinants of health and factors on health

    develop studies and strategies for the prevention or control of disease

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level A, that is:  IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
