Overview

This course offers graduates a major in psychology accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), permitting them to undertake the further training needed to obtain professional qualifications.

This course enables you to gain an introduction to psychology as a behavioural science including training in research techniques and research design and analysis. As you progress through the course, you will cover topics such as developmental and biological psychology, psychopathology and clinical psychology, principles and processes of test development, test administration and test interpretation. The course also covers cognitive psychology, cross-cultural and Indigenous psychology, social psychology and personality. You will gain a strong foundation in professional ethics for psychologists, including advanced knowledge of the ethical, legal and professional responsibilities of practising psychologists.

The course consists of nine core units and one elective unit. You must complete both foundational units (PSY4111 and PSY4122) before proceeding to the intermediate units (PSY4131 and PSY4051). Once both intermediate units are complete, you are able to progress onto the advanced level units.

  •  PSY4122 Psychology foundations: The social self
  •  PSY4051 Psychological inquiry: Theory, methods, and practice 1
  •  PSY4131 Developmental and biological psychology
  •  PSY4032 Psychopathology and clinical science
  •  PSY4041 Psychological testing and ethics
  •  PSY4062 Psychological inquiry: Theory, methods, and practice 2
  •  PSY4081 Perception and cognition
  •  PSY4151 Personality and social psychology

and one elective unit from the following:

  •  PSY4140 Introduction to counselling
  •  PSY4180 Contemporary issues and new directions in psychology

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level A, that is:  IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test

Successful completion of this course may provide a pathway to one of the following Monash University APAC-accredited fourth year psychology programs:

  • Graduate Diploma of Psychology Advanced (M5003)
