This course, offered by the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, provides the full range of quantitative, analytical and communication skills necessary to work in the broad domain of public health. It also provides skills in the quantitative methods of the population-based health sciences and their problem-solving application for primary care provision within Australia and developing countries.

The course adopts an adult learning approach and is structured in two parts: Part A. Fundamental principles of public health, and Part B. Advanced principles of public health.

Part A. Fundamental principles of public health
In these studies, you will gain fundamental professional knowledge in the core skills, knowledge, and disciplines of public health through the study of epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, and health promotion.

Part B. Advanced principles of public health
In these studies, you will advance your knowledge and skills across specialised domains of public health through core studies in public health discipline areas including epidemiology, health policy, management in health, occupational health and safety, and planetary health.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course: 

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points (all units).
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 48 credit points consisting of: MPH5301, MPH5303, MPH5304, MPH5306, MPH5309, MPH5310, MPH5314, MPH5319

Part A. Fundamental principles of public health (36 points)

You must complete the following units:

  • MPH5302 Biostatistics: concepts and applications
  • MPH5305 Epidemiology: concepts and applications
  • MPH5306 Foundations of health promotion
  • MPH5313 Foundations of public health
  • MPH5314 Epidemiology of chronic disease
  • MPH5320 Research methods in healthcare

Part B. Advanced principles of public health (36 points)

You must complete the following units:

  • MPH5301 Health systems and policy
  • MPH5303 Epidemiology of infectious diseases
  • MPH5304 Leading and managing public health and healthcare
  • MPH5309 Occupational health and safety
  • MPH5310 Introduction to environmental and planetary health
  • MPH5319 Managing digital health

    advise on the determinants and public health management of chronic disease and lifestyle factors

    describe key socio-demographic trends and major public health determinants and inequalities

    develop public health policy to reduce the impact of health problems within the community

    design, develop and manage health promotion and disease prevention strategies to reduce the impact of health problems within the community

    demonstrate an understanding of the importance of establish effective partnerships and multi-sectoral action to achieve improved public health outcome

    develop and apply skills in a public health management and/or leadership role.

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level A, that is:  IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no band lower than 6.0); or Pearson Test of English (Academic): score of 58 overall with no band lower than 50; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 79 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21, Listening: 12, Reading: 13 and Speaking: 18; or Equivalent approved English test
