Overview

The Master of Health Professions Education qualifies you to apply principles and theories that inform educational practice in a range of clinical and other relevant contexts to undertake professional and highly skilled work and as educators in the health professions. This practice-based qualification builds on the existing Graduate Certificate of Health Professions Education. It is suitable for a broad range of health professionals who are, or will be, engaged in the teaching, assessment, evaluation, curriculum design, mentoring and supervision of health professionals in a range of clinical and other contexts. You have the option of taking an education practice or a research practice capstone. The research capstone can articulate to a PhD.

Course structure

Part A. Core studies24 credit points
You must complete the following:
- HPE5100
- 'Assessment in health professions education' short course with assessment (6 credit points)
- 6 credit points from Part C the approved elective units and list of short courses with assessment
Part B. Applied studies24 credit points
You must complete either a Coursework pathway or Research pathway

Coursework pathway

24 credit points
You must complete 12 credit points from Part C the approved elective units and list of short courses with assessment not already completed in Part A and the following capstone unit, which must be completed last.

Research pathway

24 credit points
You must complete the following unit and short course 'Introduction to education research in the health professions and sciences' (12 credit points) with assessment.

Note: Your choice of project must be aligned and approved by the Course Director prior to commencement of both "Introduction to education research in the health professions and sciences" and MAP5010.
Part C. Specified elective studies24 credit points
You must complete 24 credit points from the approved elective units and list of short courses with assessment below, not already completed in Part A and B.

Please note that only one of the following can be chosen: MAP5200 Improving Indigenous equity in professional practice or
Sustainable healthcare in practice.

The handbook's description of this structure

This course is structured into three parts: Part A. Core studies, Part B. Applied studies, and Part C. Specified elective studies. Each part comprises a combination of units and short courses.

Part A. Core studies

This study will provide you with professional teaching and advanced supervisory skills in both clinical and non-clinical environments. It will facilitate the application of principles and theories that inform educational practice and allow for specialism through the choice of elective studies.

Part B. Applied studies

You have the opportunity to choose one of the following pathways:

a) Coursework pathway – in this pathway you will undertake a core capstone unit and combine it with elective units to suit your career interests. In the capstone unit you will have the option of focusing on education practice or research practice and will be required to integrate, extend and apply knowledge and skills gained in the course to professional practice development.

b) Research pathway – in this pathway you will undertake research in a health professions sciences unit and complete a research project. You will be required to demonstrate your ability to integrate and apply theories, principles and practice to a specific health professions education scenario or issue. Your choice of project must be aligned and approved by the Course Director prior to commencement of both Introduction to Education Research in the Health Professions and Sciences and MAP5010.

Part C. Specified elective studies

In this study, you will have the opportunity to expand your key areas of interest through completion of electives that will develop skills and knowledge in health professions education. Electives comprise assessed short courses and approved units.

  • You will receive specified credit for assessed short courses that you completed successfully prior to your enrolment in this course.
  • Not all short courses are available every semester.
  • The “Assessment in Health Professions Education” short course with assessment is a compulsory requirement for course completion.
  • The above short courses are not eligible for FEE-HELP.

Master's entry points

Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:

  • If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C.
  • If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part A and Part B.

Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.

All units are 6 points unless otherwise stated.

Part A. Core studies (24 points)

You must complete the following units:

  • HPE5100 Foundations of health professions education (12 points)
  • Assessment in Health Professions Education
  • 6 credit points from Part C the approved elective units^ and list of short courses with assessment* 

Part B. Applied studies (24 points)

You must complete either a. or b. below:

Coursework pathway (24 points)

  • HPE5200 Health professions and simulation education in practice (12 points)
  • 12 credit points from Part C the approved elective units^ and list of short courses with assessment*, not completed in Part A

Research pathway# (24 points)

  • MPD0022 Introduction to education research in the health professions and sciences -  short course (12 points)
  • MAP5010 Advanced health practice research project (12 points)

#Note: Your choice of project must be aligned and approved by the Course Director prior to commencement of both Introduction to Education Research in the Health Professions and Sciences and MAP5010. 

Part C. Specified elective studies (24 points)

You must complete 24 credit points from the approved elective units^ and list of short courses with assessment not already completed in Part A and B.*

Note: Please note that only one of the following can be chosen: MAP5200 Improving Indigenous equity in professional practice or Sustainable Healthcare in Practice.

*Assessed short courses must be chosen from the following list of short courses offered by the School of Clinical Sciences. Please note that not all short courses are offered every semester. The short courses are not eligible for FEE-HELP.

Entry requirements

English language

Monash Level C, that is: IELTS (Academic): 7.0 overall (no band lower than 6.5); or Pearson Test of English (Academic):  score of 65 overall with no band lower than 58; or TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 94 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 24, Listening: 20, Reading: 19 and Speaking: 20; or Equivalent approved English test

The Master of Health Professions Education qualifies you to apply principles and theories that inform educational practice in a range of clinical and other relevant contexts, and to undertake professional and highly skilled work as an educator in the health professions.
