Overview
The Master of Clinical Simulation qualifies you to apply principles and theories that inform educational practice in a range of clinical simulation and other relevant contexts to undertake professional and highly skilled work and as educators and simulationists in the health professions. This practice-based qualification builds on the existing Graduate Certificate of Clinical Simulation. It is suitable for a broad range of health professionals and others who are, or will be, engaged in simulation-based education. This includes the teaching, assessment, evaluation, curriculum design, scenario design, debriefing, mentoring and supervision of health professionals in a range of clinical and other contexts. The qualification is also suited to health professionals who use simulation for healthcare service quality improvement or systems testing. However, the use of simulation as an educational method is prioritised. You have the option of taking an education practice or a research practice capstone. The research capstone can articulate to a PhD.

The handbook's description of this structure
This course is structured into three parts: Part A. Core studies, Part B. Applied studies, and Part C. Specified elective studies. Each part comprises a combination of units and micro-credentials.
Part A. Core studies
This study will provide you with professional teaching and advanced supervisory skills in clinical and other learning environments using simulation as an educational method. It will facilitate the application of principles and theories that inform simulation practices and specialist knowledge through the choice of elective studies.
Part B. Applied studies
You have the opportunity to choose one of the following pathways:
a) Coursework pathway – in this pathway, you will undertake a capstone unit and combine it with elective units to suit your career interests. In the capstone unit you will have the option of focusing on either education practice or research practice and will be required to integrate, extend and apply knowledge and skills gained in the course to professional practice development.
b) Research pathway – in this pathway you will undertake research in a health professions sciences unit and complete a research project. You will be required to demonstrate your ability to integrate and apply theories, principles and practice to a specific clinical simulation scenario or issue. Your choice of project must be aligned and approved by the Course Director prior to commencement of both Introduction to Education Research in the Health Professions and Sciences and MAP5010.
Part C. Specified elective studies
In this study, you will have the opportunity to expand your key areas of interest through completion of electives that will develop skills and knowledge of simulation for health professions education. Electives comprise micro-credentials and approved units.
List of micro-credentials:
- Quality supervision course
- Scenario design for simulation-based education
- Learning conversations: Feedback and debriefing practices in clinical simulation
- Assessment in health professions education
- Introduction to education research in the health professions and sciences
- Qualitative research methods for public health
- Fundamentals of clinical coaching
Note:
- You will receive specified credit for micro-credentials that you completed successfully prior to your enrolment in this course.
- Not all micro-credentials are available every semester.
- The above micro-credentials are not eligible for FEE-HELP.
Master's entry points
Depending on prior qualifications you may receive entry level credit (a form of block credit) which determines your point of entry to the course:
- If you are admitted at entry level 1 you complete 72 credit points, comprising Part A, Part B and Part C.
- If you are admitted at entry level 2 you complete 48 credit points, comprising Part A and Part B.
Note: If you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit and complete one of the higher credit-point options.
