Overview
This is a joint PhD program between Monash University and the University of Newcastle.
You will undertake your doctoral studies through a collaborative arrangement between Monash University and Newcastle University. At the core of this program is the completion of a substantial research thesis on an agreed topic under the guidance of supervisors from both Monash and Newcastle. Your research training will also be further enhanced by professional development activities or coursework units designed to support you in your academic and professional development as per the program you are enrolled into.
Upon completion of this joint PhD program, you will be able to demonstrate that you have successfully designed and executed a research project that makes an original and substantial contribution to your discipline. In your research journey, you will have also acquired the necessary skills and professional attributes to make an immediate and enduring impact on academia, industry, government, or community.
Course structure
Residency: Each student will be required to undertake a minimum 12 months stay at each institution during the course of their enrolment, as agreed to by their supervisors
Annual progress reviews - Each student enrolled in the joint PhD will undertake annual progress reviews at the 12th, 24th, and 36th months of enrolment. The format and requirement of the milestones will follow Monash's Graduate Research Progress Management Procedures. If a milestone due date corresponds with the student's stay at Newcastle, the milestone could be completed virtually, for example, via Zoom.
Monash Doctoral Program - Each student enrolled in the joint PhD will complete the Monash Doctoral Program (MDP) relevant to the enrolling Academic Unit. This may include either a coursework program or a professional development program. A student may, upon agreement of the relevant Program Director/Graduate Coordinator, undertake equivalent professional development training at the University of Newcastle, where relevant to the enrolled MDP.
Oral defence - It is the University of Newcastle's responsibility to appoint an examination advisor whose responsibility is to make the necessary arrangements with the examiners, the student and both institutions over the time and place of the oral defence. The Chair of Examiners at Monash University, normally the School Graduate Coordinator, must be kept informed of all relevant progression.
