The handbook's description of this structure

The course comprises 24 points structured into two parts: Part A. Core prescribing skills studies and Part B. Core prescribing microcredentials. You can complete Part A and Part B in any order or concurrently. 

Part A. Core prescribing skills studies

In this part of the course, you will complete two 6-credit point units of study focused on developing your prescribing skills - PGC5301 Pharmacist prescribing skills 1 and PGC5302 Pharmacist prescribing skills 2. 

You will develop skills relevant to the four step prescribing process of information gathering, clinical decision-making, communicating and documenting treatment decisions and monitoring responses to treatment. You will also develop skills to support prescribing practice within the professional scope of practice of Australian pharmacists such as person-centred care, ethical/legal practice, clinical governance, quality of use medicines, shared-decision making and evidence based practice. In order to apply these skills, you will also learn about the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic primary care conditions (e.g. asthma, gastrointestinal conditions, hypertension and diabetes) and will make prescribing decisions for simulated cases involving such conditions. 

PGC5302 Pharmacist prescribing skills 2 includes assessments to demonstrate your prescribing competency that are completed in a work-integrated learning environment under the supervision of an approved registered prescriber (i.e. designated prescriber).  

Part A of this course is accredited with conditions by the Australian Pharmacy Council.

Part B. Core prescribing microcredentials

In this part of the course, you will complete two microcredentials focused on Pharmacist Prescribing in specific clinical conditions - Pharmacist prescribing: Clinical conditions 1 and Pharmacist prescribing: Clinical conditions 2. You will learn how to diagnose and manage preventative health conditions (e.g. contraception, travel health and smoking cessation) as well as acute and chronic musculoskeletal and dermatological conditions (including wound care management). 

You may complete the microcredentials in either order, prior to or during your enrolment in this course.

Part A. Core prescribing skills studies (12 points)

  • PGC5302 Pharmacist prescribing skills 2

Part B. Core prescribing microcredentials (12 points) 

You must complete the following microcredentials:

  • Pharmacist prescribing: Clinical conditions 1 
  • Pharmacist prescribing: Clinical conditions 2

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that you will be able to:

    describe the signs, symptoms, diagnostic features and management options relevant to a range of acute primary care conditions and chronic diseases

The Graduate Certificate of Pharmacist Prescribing equips you to prescribe medications within professional and personal scopes of practice. You will develop skills relevant to the four step prescribing process of information gathering, clinical decision-making, communicating treatment decisions and monitoring responses to treatment. You will also develop knowledge and skills relevant to support safe prescribing practices including quality use of medicines, person-centred care, shared-decision making, cultural competency, interprofessional collaborative care, evidence based practice and clinical governance. You will apply the principles of legal and ethical practice to make safe prescribing decisions within your professional and personal scope of practice.

In this course, you will learn how to diagnose and manage common acute, chronic and preventative health primary care conditions. This includes developing skills in basic physical examination techniques in order to make a working diagnosis (where relevant).

You will apply your knowledge and skills to make safe prescribing decisions for simulated and real-life patient cases. A core component of this course will require you to be supported by an approved Ahpra registered healthcare prescriber to assess your prescribing competency within a work-integrated learning setting.
