Overview
In this unit you will undertake a semester long research project in data science. The research project will embed you in a data science team in a government, industry or academic setting. This project will draw together the mathematical, computational and applied skills developed in the Bachelor of Applied Data Science, and the research skills developed in the coursework component of the Honours year.
You will further develop and apply your analytic and technical skills to interrogate and understand large and complex real-world data sets drawn from academic, governmental and business problems. You will continue to develop your communication skills through the writing of a major report and a seminar presentation, which communicate your analysis and conclusions to a range of potential stakeholders.
The research project will be complemented by weekly seminars to provide insight into real problems tackled by experts in the field.

Workload and teaching
- Seminars12 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
A total of 24 hours per week comprising:
- Attendance at a 1-hour seminar;
- 1-hour consultation with the supervisor;
- 17 hours per week of research (averaged over the semester);
- 4 hours per week writing the report (averaged over the semester) and
- 1 hour per week preparing the oral report (averaged over the semester).
The objectives of this unit are to introduce students to topical research in data science, develop their research skills such that they can undertake independent research and develop their written and oral communication skills to a professional standard. Therefore, the most appropriate learning method is active learning, which is achieved through industry placements and weekly seminars.
You will be embedded in organisations and undertaking active learning. You will apply your accumulated knowledge to critically analyse the relevant literature, plan and complete projects, interrogate large and complex data-sets, implement advanced machine learning algorithms on the data, research new data science techniques to apply to your project, and communicate your results to a range of stakeholders through written and oral presentations (LO1-LO7).
