Synopsis
The primary objective of the unit is to help you compile a collection of your writing samples across genres to serve as a portfolio for job seeking purposes upon graduation. You will bring to bear the breadth of your learning in your first and second year units to engage in a series of creative and non-creative writing exercises. Emphasis for this unit will be more on the latter, and will focus especially on genres frequently associated with the workplace such as writing reviews, writing a short argumentative piece on a given topic, writing speeches, writing advertising materials, lifestyle writing, and so forth. One of the assignments is tagged to the Commonwealth Young Writer's Prize, and you have the option to do a creative writing assignment to be submitted as an entry if he/she wishes. The unit will also feature various guest speakers including professionals involved in the publishing industry, and well known writers and journalists, to expose you in this unit to the complexities of publishing one's work successfully.
