Gender and development
APG5045
Synopsis
The unit will introduce you to the main debates, concepts and practices in the field of gender and international development. You will explore broader debates and conceptual frameworks related to the study of gender, gender equity, and gender justice, including how gender operates with other relations of power, such as race, ethnicity, class, and disabilities, that inform current development practice. Using available datasets and indicators, we will examine historical and contemporary trends in gender inequality and analyse why and how gender inequality and injustice are pervasive, albeit variegated, worldwide. We will identify approaches to reduce gender inequality and promote social inclusion in development practice. You will gain an overview of gender analysis methods, tools and frameworks that can be applied across a range of sectors. You will be given the opportunity to apply these skills to real case studies drawn from contemporary non-government organisations, government and social movements grappling with complex geopolitical and environmental realities. The unit will conclude by examining the drivers and actors involved in transformative change. You will have the opportunity to develop reflexive skills that are essential for navigating the complex terrain of working in international development.
