Overview
This unit consists of two components:
(1) An introduction to the theory, principles and techniques of interpreting and an overview of ethical and professional issues;
(2) The practice of consecutive interpreting: dialogue interpreting and speech interpreting.
Topics to be covered include an overview of the history, of the essential theoretical concepts and of the ethical principles of interpreting; aspects of speaking, listening and non-verbal communication fundamental to consecutive interpreting.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Apply the basic techniques of interpreting in a dialogue mode provide consecutive interpreting of speeches

Apply the skills of analytic reading and listening, memorisation and note-taking indifferent modes of interpreting

Understand and apply ethical principles in a variety of interpreting situations

Apply knowledge of socio-cultural features of the various domains of interpreting in Australia

Apply knowledge of the history of the interpreting profession in Australia and worldwide to their interpreting practice
