Overview

The unit offers a broad view of the aid and development sector, providing a framework for deeper, more specific investigation. The course of study will examine the discourse and concept of ‘human development’: what is counted as human development and the various ways it has been approached and measured over time. A mapping of contemporary mainstream and alternative international aid and development organizations, institutions and practices will be undertaken by students. Questions posed will be whose development is being strategised for? Who does it benefit and who designs the programs? What kind of global system frames it? The historical operation of development interventions into post-colonial countries within a ‘world system’ of economics, trade and global capital will also be analysed.
