Overview

The unit serves as an introduction to journalism practice including research, interviewing, writing and production. These skills are honed and developed in later units. Students learn the fundamentals of journalism: what is news, how to find and research stories and how to write concise news copy for print and broadcast and creative copy for features. Students are also introduced to multi-skilling including self-editing, headline writing and photography. Students work independently  to develop a number of stories with the aim of having these published.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.

APG5095 is focused on introducing students to journalism practice over six weeks. There are six three-hour face-to-face class offered throughout the semester. Students are expected to have completed the necessary Pre-Class activities, including online modules, readings and activities, before attending class. Students are also expected to engage in class and complete Post-Class activities.
