Foreign policy of emerging powers
APG5105
Synopsis
This unit is designed for students who have studied International Relations in a prior program. It examines the foreign policy of emerging powers in the global system. It is divided into three modules. The first module engages you with an understanding of advanced conceptual approaches to understanding foreign policy generally and the foreign policy of emerging powers (states with significant and increasing capacity and status-seeking intent). The second module presents a series of case studies of 4 emerging powers. These case studies may change each year (e.g. Indonesia, India, Brazil and Iran), and will focus on states central to current discussions of changing global dynamics. The third module examines how emerging powers interact with both ‘great powers’ (e.g. the US) and established middle powers (e.g. Australia) and how these states are seeking to navigate an international system with a changing centre of gravity.
