Overview
The unit focuses on the key institutions of Australian government including the federal constitution and comparisons with a state constitution, the operation of the parliament, the formation and operation of an executive government under the auspices of the Westminster model, and the incidence of power sharing between national and state government. The unit seeks to investigate the capacity of Australian governance to deliver national policy in a federated system.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

Foster an advanced critical understanding of contemporary Australian politics;

Foster a critical understanding of the Australian system of national governance, including the role played by state government;

Foster an understanding of the Australian federal system;

Examine the nature of Australian policy debate, particularly with respect to the role of the state in society and economy;

Foster a critical understanding of the key governing institutions in Australia including the Executive, the Parliament, the Public Service and the High Court.
