Overview
This unit seeks to equip you with an understanding of the meaning and purpose of cultural policy, developing conceptual and analytical skills for its framing, contextualised in specific social, political and economic contexts and purposes.
It theorises the origin, formulation, operation and impact of policies for culture and creativity in contemporary society. You will focus on global, national and local policies that have nurtured the cultural and creative industries, identifying objectives for and debates about the production of value - economic and social. You will examine the impact of cultural policy on historical, existing and future practices by businesses, agencies, institutions and communities of interest.
Offering you a core grounding in policy thinking and associated methods in the interdisciplinary space of creative and cultural industries, addressing real world scenarios of cultural policy governance to support research and practice.
Indicative subjects covered in this unit include: investigating and defining cultural policy; content and speech regulation; digital platforms and artificial intelligence (AI); GLAM policy (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums); public service broadcasters, public media stacks; cultural rights, participation and cultural citizenship; cultural labour and regulation/funding for artists; copyrights and intellectual property; education, cultural commons and the cultural ecology; politics of memory, soft power, national identities; culture wars and wars against culture.
