Overview
Over the past half-century, digital media technologies have wrought profound changes across all aspects of human society. This unit explores the nature of these changes by tracing their evolution, identifying key issues and debates associated with them, and considering their future trajectories. Students will examine key approaches to digital media technologies within communication and media studies. Exploring diverse examples of digital media artefacts and technologies – such as algorithms, interfaces, databases, machine learning, robotics, biometrics, and virtual reality – the unit considers how our ideas about the world shape the design of digital media technologies, and how they shape us in return.
