Specialised health interpreting

This unit specialises in an important area of interpreting practice: healthcare. Content knowledge and specialist language are acquired that relate to the contexts of this field. You will also acquire knowledge of the discourse and communication features of the interlocutors that medical interpreters work with: doctors, nursing staff, clinicians, mental health specialists and patients. This unit builds on skills acquired in APG5049 and APG5885. You are required to have proficiency in dialogue interpreting, sight translation, bi-directional consecutive interpreting of speeches and some experience in simultaneous interpreting. This unit focuses on consecutive interpreting (both into and from English), and simultaneous interpreting (both into and from English). Interactional approaches to interpreting are presented as are theoretical concepts relating to health interpreting as an emerging research field.
