Overview
As globalisation facilitates the increased contact of individuals with different linguistic and socio-cultural backgrounds across both online and offline spaces, there is a growing need to understand the relationship between language and culture. In this unit, students will acquire knowledge and skills to understand the linguistic and socio-cultural factors that shape complex intercultural communication events across a range of personal and professional contexts. Key theories underpinning intercultural communication are explored, including language as social action and cultural identity. Students apply their insights to case-studies from a wide variety of languages and contexts, and develop skills to address intercultural communication in their own personal and professional contexts.
