Overview

The unit focuses on training you in interpreting across a wide array of settings that commonly occur in public service/community interpreting. These include: employment, housing, welfare, taxation/finance, tourism, business, medicine (working with GPs) and family violence. Content knowledge and specialist language are acquired that relate to the contexts of these settings. This unit builds on the acquisition of dialogue interpreting and on the development and reinforcement of skills and techniques needed for consecutive speech interpreting. Sight translation is introduced as a new skill at the beginning of this unit. In the second half of this unit, simultaneous interpreting is introduced. All four skills: dialogue, consecutive speech and simultaneous interpreting, and sight translation are practised in simulated interactions. Interactional approaches to interpreting are presented as are theoretical concepts relating to public service/community interpreting as a rapidly expanding research field.
