Overview

This unit explores structural performance as it relates to architectural design and construction. This includes application of structural principles and the implications of these in relation to architectural design and construction processes and outcomes. Direct physical and digital testing and manipulation of materials and structural systems will be used to understand and assess their application in architecture. A range of structural behaviours will be addressed in response to life-cycle optimisation and resource efficiencies as well as their historical and contemporary relationship to design intent. Projects will be introduced to promote dialogue between this unit and design studio project processes and outcomes. Integral to the subject matter is the engagement with strategies for environmental sustainability in relation to architectural performance.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Demonstrate an understanding of issues of sustainable development in relation to structural system design;

  2. 2

    Apply the basic principles of structural and life-cycle design to analyse and optimise the resource efficiency of buildings of different typologies;

  3. 3

    Locate activities within an historic and contemporary development of structural systems and fabrication techniques;

  4. 4

    Select appropriate materials and construction processes by applying knowledge of structural systems in architectural design;

  5. 5

    Understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study.
