This unit foregrounds the role that sociocultural factors play in understandings and experiences of addiction. It aims to deepen students’ comprehension of addictive behaviours within a broader sociocultural context.

Students will consider insights and perspectives from a broad spectrum of social science disciplines, such as sociology, criminology, politics, history, literature, psychology, anthropology, and cultural and media studies.

Areas covered include the cultural (re)positioning of drugs throughout human history, the role of media in addiction discourse and dialogue, and the intersection of addictive behaviours with group narratives, identities and norms.
