Crafting compelling written content
ATS1078
Synopsis
Writing is about communicating ideas, making claims and thinking clearly. It is foundational to all university disciplines from the humanities through to the sciences. To write well is to think well. Well-crafted writing also persuades and convinces readers that the ideas matter. In the humanities, writing presents rigorous, evidence-based content and yet can also move readers emotionally, physically, and intellectually.
In this unit, you will develop the essential features of high-quality writing to prepare you for professional environments and roles that value distinctive and effective content. As new technologies increasingly produce generic content, it is more important than ever that writers develop their own voice and write in a way that makes a difference by provoking, entertaining and convincing readers. In this unit you will learn to express ideas that are clearly and precisely grounded in fact and supported by evidence. The unit will also provide practical strategies on how to write content of the highest quality for different contexts. You will learn techniques in rhetoric, storytelling and style from fields such as journalism, advertising, literature and media to both engage and persuade audiences.
