Overview
In this unit you will explore the development and dynamics of multicultural and multilingual societies in Australia and global contexts. You will examine key dimensions including migrant communities, cultural identity formation, government policy and grassroot movements, and the tensions and processes associated with cultural integration and conflict. Through the analysis of real-world case studies, you will investigate how multicultural and multilingual societies are shaped and sustained across generations through a range of practices such as language education, community engagement, media, and cultural and artistic production.
You will critically reflect on your own positioning within multicultural and multilingual societies by considering historical contexts, intercultural communication challenges, and emerging future directions, including AI-mediated communication. You will explore a range of methodologies that enable you to undertake a small research-based or creative project.
The unit is taught by academic staff from across Monash University's language programs.
