Overview
Structural patterns can be seen in various aspects of language and this unit introduces students to ways of analysing some of them. Drawing on data from a range of languages, we concentrate on techniques and frameworks to analyse how words are built (morphology), how we build larger units with words (syntax), and how these processes are reflected in meaning (semantics). Meaning emerges in context, so we also consider the role of cognitive and cultural constraints in shaping language forms, variation in the use of linguistic structures, and the processes by which languages become standardised.
