Crime prevention and crime control
ATS1422
Synopsis
You will develop foundational knowledge of theory and practice of crime control in Australia and internationally. The unit examines the roles of police and other institutions and organisations in controlling and preventing crime. By focusing on crime rather than criminality, the unit emphasises the understanding of the role of criminogenic environments and the way that crime is patterned as powerful tools for analysis and prevention of crime. The unit discusses the strengths and limitations of contemporary policing approaches to crime prevention as well as popular strategies for reducing the incidence and prevalence of crime. In this unit, you will learn to look for crime patterns and seek to explain them in terms of environmental influences with the goal of developing practical crime prevention strategies. The emerging challenges of controlling transnational and organised crime, cybercrime and terrorism are also discussed.
